Thousands of people take a holy dip at the sacred Mahamaham tank at Kumbakonam today in view of the `Masi Maham' festival.
The 10-day festival, which started with a flag hoisting in Siva and Vaishnavite temples at Kumbakonam, ended today with the `Theerthavari' at the Mahamaham tank. People came to the tank in the morning and took the holy dip.
The `Masi Maham' festival is celebrated each year in the Tamil month of `Masi' during `Maha Natchathiram' and on `Pournami' day.
The festival becomes a `Mahamaham' once in 12 years. The `Mahamaham' was celebrated last year when lakhs of people took the holy dip for 10 days in the tank.
Idols of Adhikumbeswarar, Abhimukeswarar and Nageswaraswamy were brought to the Mahamaham tank for the `Theerthavari' today.
In the evening, idols from Vaishnavite temples are taken to the Cauvery for the `Theerthavari.' A car festival of Chakrapani Temple was held today as part of the festival celebrations.
